How to link multiple devices to your Vaultr account
Link up to 5 devices to your Vaultr account, each with its own keys. Use Vaultr securely across phone and tablet without weakening end-to-end encryption.
You can link up to 5 devices to your Vaultr account. Each device has its own cryptographic keys, so you can message securely from your phone, tablet, and other devices while keeping Vaultr’s end-to-end encryption intact.
Multi-device support means your encrypted conversations follow you without weakening security. Because each device carries its own keys, there’s no single shared secret copied around between devices.
How do I link a new device?
- On a device you’re already using, open Vaultr and go to the device or security settings.
- Choose Link a new device.
- On the new device, install and open Vaultr and follow the linking flow to connect it to your account.
- The new device generates its own keys and joins your account — up to a total of 5 devices.
Once linked, the new device becomes a full participant in your encrypted conversations.
How many devices can I link?
You can link up to 5 devices to a single Vaultr account.
Each linked device is a fully fledged endpoint for your encrypted messaging, and each device has its own keys rather than sharing a single key across all of them.
Why does each device having its own keys matter?
Giving every device its own keys is a deliberate security design:
- Your account does not rely on one master key copied between devices.
- Each linked device is its own cryptographic participant in your conversations.
- Vaultr’s end-to-end encryption model stays sound across all your hardware.
This avoids a single shared secret that, if exposed on one device, would weaken security on all of them.
Will my chat history and backups be available on a new device?
Vaultr supports encrypted chat backups to services like Google Drive or iCloud.
- Backups are encrypted, so your history stays protected even when stored off-device.
- A newly linked device can restore from these encrypted backups instead of relying on any plaintext copies.
- Vaultr’s servers relay ciphertext only, never your plaintext messages.
If you enable backups, a new device can access your history by restoring from your encrypted backup.
What messaging features work across my linked devices?
All of Vaultr’s core messaging features are designed to work across your up-to-5 devices:
- Read receipts (sent → delivered → read)
- Typing indicators and online presence
- Emoji reactions
- Encrypted attachments — images, video, audio, and PDF up to 100 MB
- User blocking
- Encrypted chat backups to Google Drive or iCloud
Contacts are matched via contact discovery by hashed phone number, so your contact list and network stay consistent wherever you sign in.
Is multi-device safe for a self-custody app?
Yes. Vaultr is non-custodial, and the multi-device model reinforces that:
- Each device holds its own keys, so you remain in control of your cryptographic identity on every device.
- Encryption is on by default for every conversation, on every device.
- There is no central key that Vaultr can access or that needs to be shared between devices.
This keeps the self-custody and end-to-end encryption guarantees intact even when you use multiple devices.
FAQ
How many devices can I link to Vaultr?
You can link up to 5 devices, and each device has its own keys.
Do all my devices share the same encryption key?
No. Each device has its own keys, which keeps end-to-end encryption strong across every endpoint.
Can I back up my chats for a new device?
Yes. Vaultr supports encrypted chat backups to services like Google Drive or iCloud, so your history stays protected while still being restorable on a new device.
Does linking more devices weaken my security?
No. Because each device holds its own keys and encryption is on by default, adding devices does not introduce a shared secret or weaken your conversations.
